Should the Sabres Bench Alex Lyon for Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen?
During the series against the Boston Bruins, the Buffalo Sabres made the decision to bench Goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen for Alex Lyon after Luukkonen allowed the Bruins to score 7 goals in 2 games. Lyon then proceeded to allow 5 goals in the following 4 games, helping give the Sabres the series victory. The Sabres made the decision to stick with Lyon to start the series against the Montreal Canadiens. Lyon has now allowed 7 goals in the first 2 games of this series. Stop me if you have heard this before. Lyon has 155 saves off 166 shots for a save percentage of 93.37%. Luukkonen has 32 saves off 9 shots for a save percentage of 82.05%. This is way lower than Lyon. Now, should the Sabres go back to Luukkonen? Would he have a new fire lit after being benched for 6 games? Lyon played very well in 5 of those 6 games. Not so much in the most recent one on May 8th. With that said, the Sabres should give Lyon another shot in goal. Is it a mistake if they bench him? No. Though with his play in the series against Boston, I think he deserves a chance to redeem himself in game 3 against the Canadiens on May 10th. If his struggles continue though, then Buffalo should not hesitate to make a change during game 3.
